American Bobtail

The American Bobtail is a breed of short-tailed cats, bred by North American felinologists in the second half of the last century. It is authentically known that the kitten, randomly selected in the state of Arizona, became the “patriarch” of this glorious cat species. He was a classic color – “tabby”, and his funny short tail with a tassel gave his look unique. The causes of such a peculiar appearance are still unknown. Most likely, this is the result of a random mutation. At first they tried to cross it with Siamese cats in order to get a short-tailed cat with characteristic color-points. However, the offspring was weak, and in order to get viable short-tailed kittens, we had to use animals of various breeds.

The first standard of the breed “American bobtail” was recorded in the seventies. Then the American Bobtail cats were extremely short-haired, but later came the longhair representatives of this breed. The main distinguishing feature of the breed is the short tail. Fluffy “bob” should not reach the heels, while it must be mobile. Completely tailless animals are disqualified.

American Bobtail is a muscular, stocky cat. A large American Bobtail cat can weigh up to 9 kilograms, cats are somewhat lighter. Strong, short legs end in compact round paws. The coat is thick, dense, shaggy and hard, not adjacent to the body. A neat, smooth and silky coat is a disadvantage. Color can be absolutely any. The head is wide and short, the muzzle is decorated with fluffy sideburns. Wide-set eyes look predatory and attentive. Wide at the base of the ears, wary apart. Some even have trot tassels. One of the species of the breed, very similar in color to the lynx, even has its own name – “snow-bob”. Such a “wild” appearance in combination with a beautiful character explains the popularity of the American Bobtail breed.

Care for these animals, as well as for many other pedigreed cats, is not too complicated. They need a well-balanced diet, for which professional dry food is excellent.

If you want your cat to be a rare breed and hit its appearance, the American bobtail will be a great choice. Kittens are simply adorable, but like all babies, they require special attention. It is advisable not to take them from the mother until the age of three months.

American Bobtail is an active, but calm and unobtrusive cat. Uncommon intelligence bobtail allows the owner to feel like a real trainer. Cats of this breed have a wide range of sounds, but they are not often used. Another feature of the breed is the love of human society. You should not start an American bobtail, if you are almost never at home. This cat will easily join the big family with children and make friends with the dog.
