Long ago, the Japanese believed that the huge, terrible Nekomata cat lives high in the mountains. Its tail is like a snake, and it brings death and unhappiness to people. In order to deprive this horrible monster of the possibility of harm, the tails were cut off by innocent domestic cats. Cats are truly amazing creatures. They not only mutated in such a way that their tails began to bend and seem short, but also convinced the Japanese that a three-colored cat with a pompon tail brings happiness and success in business. True, it took a lot of time — several centuries.
The land of the rising sun showed the rest of the world a multitude of unique works of art, distinguished by their subtle sophistication. Even the native cat breed – Japanese bobtail, which was not bred in the palace of the emperor, has a noble appearance. The simplest catchers of mice in rice farms are elegant and concise. These cats are small and weigh relatively little – from two to four kilograms. Their hind legs are much longer than their forepaws, they have a characteristic gait and land on their hind legs in a jump.
A distinctive feature of a bobtail cat is its short tail. Due to the fluffy wool, it looks like a funny pom-pom, but in reality it consists of bends, creases, or spirals of the most varied shape. Most often, this strange tail sticks up or bent, like a mongrel. The breed standard does not regulate the shape of the bone structure, only a general requirement is established – visually the shape of the tail must be hidden by the hair, the visible length is not more than 8 cm. Attempting to straighten the tail or just careless touch causes the cat pain. The “retracted” bean, in which the bends begin a few centimeters from the base of the tail, is considered a significant drawback.
Japanese bobtail color can be both single-color and multi-color. Often there are white cats with colored markings – a two-color “van” or a multi-color “harlequin”. The traditional white-red-black color even received a separate name – calico or mi-ke. In principle, the color of the wool to be any, is not allowed “tipping” – different shades on the same hair or “Siamese” marks. Japanese bobtail can be shorthair or long-haired, in any case, the hair is silky, without undercoat, does not require special care.
A hardy, active, friendly cat is a Japanese bobtail. Kittens are born strong, mobile, and already at three weeks of age begin to leave their mother to explore the world around them.
Japanese bobtail chooses its owner and binds to it completely like a dog. To other family members, he is friendly, to strangers – wary, but without aggression. The Japanese Bobtail Cat loves outdoor games, and he prefers to grab his “prey” not with his paws, but with his teeth. Bobtail just needs a place for climbing and running around, it’s not a completely “sofa” version of a pet. At the same time, the Japanese bobtail is an excellent companion for active, self-confident people.
